Châteaumeillant Appellation

Châteaumeillant is located in the Cher department in center of France. The vineyards cover seven municipalities of the historical province of Berry: Châteaumeillant, St. Maur, Vesdun, Champillet, Feusines, Néret and Urciers.

With less than 100 hectares, Châteaumeillant is one of the smallest appellation of France. The wine first obtained in 1965, the label “Delimited Wine From Superior Quality”, before getting the protected designation of origin label (called AOC) in June 2010.

Red wines, supple, fine and fruity, are made from Gamay and Pinot Noir. The rosé wine (grey wine), very traditional, is obtained from Gamay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris grapes which give it a very pale pink dress with light blue highlights.

Located at the foothills of the Massif Central on sandy clays dominant lands, the vineyards date back to Roman times. Their privileged location at the junction of eight roman roads (linking the cities of Clermont-Ferrand, Issoudun, Tours, Lyon and Limoges) made it a commercial crossroads of wines.

The geographical area benefits all at once of an oceanic and continental climate. Open on the Atlantic coast, it is subject to oceanic influences, which result in a high enough level of precipitation and continental influences of the mountain that bring cold air.

The famous french Hachette Wine Guide from 2015 distinguishes the 2013 vintage of two stars (remarkable wine).
« … a fine nose that combines floral (muguet and lilac) and fresh fruits (fruits salad). Franc in attack it offers lots of volume and an almost creamy fat. The fresh and fruity finish completes this beautiful gourmet table. » Hachette Guide 2015
